Overview

What to know before filing your return

  • Which Act — returns for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) are filed under the Income-tax Act, 1961. Income from 1 April 2026 falls under the Income-tax Act, 2025.
  • New regime (default) — for FY 2025-26: nil up to ₹4 lakh, then 5% to 30% in bands up to ₹24 lakh and above. With the rebate, a resident individual with income up to ₹12 lakh (₹12.75 lakh for salaried, with the ₹75,000 standard deduction) pays no tax, except on special-rate income such as capital gains.
  • Old regime — still available for those who benefit from deductions such as 80C, 80D and home-loan interest.
  • Forms — ITR-1 for simple salary income, ITR-2 for capital gains or more than one house property, ITR-3 for business or profession, and ITR-4 for presumptive income.
  • Due dates — 31 July for most individuals; a belated return for FY 2025-26 can be filed until 31 December 2026.

Based on the Income-tax Act, 1961 (for FY 2025-26) and the Income-tax Act, 2025. Last updated: 27 September 2026.
