Received an income tax notice or an intimation on the e-filing portal? Expertvuw’s team helps you read what the notice actually asks for, gather the right records and file a complete response within the deadline — for individuals, NRIs, firms and companies.
An income tax notice is a formal communication from the Income Tax Department asking for information, documents, a corrected return or an explanation. Most notices and intimations are now issued and answered online through the e-filing portal under the e-proceedings and faceless assessment system.
Not every notice means tax is due. Many are routine: a mismatch between your return and Form 26AS/AIS, a defective return, or a request for supporting documents. What matters is responding completely and on time — an ignored notice can lead to a best-judgment assessment, penalties or interest.
From 1 April 2026 the Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the Income-tax Act, 1961. Notices relating to earlier years generally continue to refer to the old section numbers (for example 139(9), 142(1), 143(1), 143(2), 148 and 156), so the section quoted on your notice depends on the year involved.
Basis: Income-tax Act, 1961 and Income-tax Act, 2025; CBDT Circular 19/2019 on Document Identification Number (DIN); Income Tax e-filing portal guidance. Last updated: 27 September 2026.
Communications from the Department should carry a Document Identification Number (DIN). You can verify a notice on the e-filing portal before responding.
Most notices are answered through the e-Proceedings section of the e-filing portal, with documents uploaded as attachments.
Each notice states its own response date. Where more time is genuinely needed, an adjournment can be requested through the portal before the due date.
An intimation after processing a return shows adjustments. If you disagree, a rectification request or response can be filed.
Reopening of past years follows a show-cause procedure and statutory time limits that depend on the amount of income said to have escaped assessment.
Bank statements, Form 16/16A, AIS, TIS, capital gains workings and investment proofs are the documents most often requested.
Most problems with notices come from missed deadlines or incomplete replies rather than from the underlying tax position.

Log in to the e-filing portal and use the notice/order authentication service, or check that the communication carries a valid Document Identification Number (DIN). Do not click links or pay amounts from unverified emails or SMS messages.
Ignoring a notice can lead to an assessment based on the information available with the Department, along with interest and possible penalties. It is better to respond, or request an adjournment, before the due date.
Many notices allow an adjournment request through the e-filing portal. Whether it is granted depends on the proceeding and the officer, so the request should be made before the response date with a reason.
An intimation after return processing shows differences between your return and the Department’s computation. If the demand is wrong, you can respond on the portal or file a rectification request.
The Income-tax Act, 2025 applies from 1 April 2026. Notices for earlier years generally continue to cite sections of the Income-tax Act, 1961, so check the assessment year on the notice.
