Overview

How Working Capital Finance Works

Working capital finance funds the gap between paying for inputs and receiving money from customers. Banks commonly provide it as cash credit or overdraft limits secured on stock and receivables, with drawing power calculated from monthly stock statements. Lenders assess the requirement using the operating cycle, projected turnover and holding levels, supported by CMA (Credit Monitoring Arrangement) data.

MSMEs selling to large companies and PSUs can also discount invoices on RBI-authorised TReDS platforms, where financiers bid to fund approved invoices. Buyers above a specified turnover are required to register on TReDS. The MSMED Act also requires buyers to pay MSE suppliers within 45 days where agreed, and delayed dues affect the buyer’s tax deduction.

Collateral-free working capital for eligible MSEs can be covered under CGTMSE. Limits are usually reviewed and renewed every year.

Basis: RBI directions on working capital and priority sector lending; RBI TReDS framework; MSMED Act, 2006 (sections 15–16); CGTMSE guidelines. Last updated: 27 September 2026.
