Surveyors and Loss Assessors Licence – IRDAI Licensing for Individuals and Firms

Last updated: 2 October 2026

Insurance surveyors and loss assessors assess claims for general insurers and must hold an IRDAI licence in the departments they work in. Expertvuw’s team helps individuals and firms with eligibility, documentation, applications, department additions and renewals.

Overview

How Surveyor Licensing Works

Surveyors and loss assessors are regulated by the IRDAI (Insurance Surveyors and Loss Assessors) Regulations, 2015, as amended. Under the Insurance Act, general insurance claims above prescribed amounts must be assessed by a licensed surveyor.

Licences are issued to individuals or to corporate surveyors (companies or LLPs). A corporate surveyor needs at least two directors or partners who are themselves licensed surveyors. Licences are granted department-wise — Fire, Marine Cargo, Marine Hull, Engineering, Motor, Miscellaneous, Loss of Profit and Crop — and each department has its own qualification requirements, such as an engineering degree for some departments. Applicants must be members of the Indian Institute of Insurance Surveyors and Loss Assessors (IIISLA), pass the prescribed examination and complete practical training.

Surveyor licences are valid for three years. The July 2026 amendment that moved several intermediaries to perpetual registration did not cover surveyors.
