A public notice tells anyone who may have a claim or interest to come forward, or puts a change on public record. It is used before buying property, after losing original documents or share certificates, when a partner retires, and in several company law processes. We help you prepare the facts and documents, the notice is drafted by an independent advocate where needed, and it is published in the newspapers you choose.
A public notice is an advertisement in one or more newspapers that informs the public of a fact, invites objections, or records that a person is no longer responsible for something. It creates a dated public record that can later be shown to a bank, a buyer, a company, a registrar or a court.
Some notices are expected by practice, such as a title notice before a property purchase or a notice for lost property documents before a bank or society acts. Others are required by law. For example, under the Indian Partnership Act, 1932, a retiring partner can remain liable to third parties for acts of the firm until public notice of the retirement is given (sections 32 and 72). Several Companies Act processes also require a newspaper advertisement in a set format.
The wording matters. A notice should identify the person, property or document precisely, state what is being notified, and give a clear address and period for objections.
Based on the Indian Partnership Act, 1932, the Companies Act, 2013 and common practice for title and loss notices. Last updated: 27 September 2026.
