Home / Insurance — IRDAI / ISNP Approval

Last updated: 2 October 2026
Insurers and eligible intermediaries that want to sell and service policies through their own website or app need IRDAI permission to operate an Insurance Self-Network Platform (ISNP). Expertvuw’s team helps prepare the application, platform documentation and compliance framework.
An Insurance Self-Network Platform (ISNP) is an electronic platform — a website or app — set up with IRDAI permission to sell and service insurance policies online. It was introduced by IRDAI’s Guidelines on Insurance e-Commerce (2017) to allow insurers and intermediaries to offer end-to-end digital purchase, payment and servicing.
ISNPs can be operated by insurers and by eligible intermediaries such as insurance brokers, corporate agents and web aggregators. Individual (tied) agents cannot set up their own ISNP. The platform must meet requirements on information security, data protection, disclosures, payment handling, policy issuance and grievance handling, and certain activities must be carried out by the insurer or the registered intermediary itself.
IRDAI has updated several parts of its policyholder protection and distribution framework since 2024, so the current applicable requirements should be confirmed at the time of application.
Basis: IRDAI Guidelines on Insurance e-Commerce (2017), as updated; IRDAI (Protection of Policyholders’ Interests, Operations and Allied Matters of Insurers) Regulations, 2024; applicable intermediary regulations; Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. Last updated: 27 September 2026.
