Last updated: 2 October 2026
Changing your name after marriage, correcting a spelling, or adopting a new name altogether usually involves three steps: a sworn affidavit, advertisements in newspapers, and publication in the Gazette of India. The Gazette notification is the record most authorities accept when updating PAN, Aadhaar, passport and bank accounts. We prepare the documents and handle the process.
In India, an adult can change their name by declaring the change and publishing it. The usual process is to swear an affidavit before a notary or executive magistrate stating the old name, the new name and the reason, publish the change in newspapers, and then apply for publication in the Gazette of India through the Department of Publication.
Not every change needs the Gazette. For a change of surname after marriage, many authorities accept the marriage certificate. But for other changes, or where records are inconsistent, a Gazette notification gives a single public record that can be shown to every authority.
Name changes for minors are made through the parents or guardian, and government employees follow their department’s rules. Some States also publish name changes in their own gazettes.
