Understanding ISO certification and quality standards

What this section covers

Management system standards describe how an organisation should run a process – quality, safety, environment or information security – so that it works consistently and can be checked by an independent auditor. This section explains the main standards and assurance frameworks businesses in India pursue:

  • ISO 9001 – quality management systems.
  • ISO 14001 – environmental management systems.
  • ISO 45001 – occupational health and safety management systems.
  • ISO 22000 and HACCP – food safety management and hazard analysis for food businesses.
  • ISO/IEC 27001 – information security management systems.
  • GMP certification – good manufacturing practice, relevant to pharmaceuticals, food, cosmetics and similar sectors; for drugs in India, GMP requirements are set out in Schedule M to the Drugs Rules, 1945.
  • CE marking – a conformity marking for products placed on the European Economic Area market, based on the applicable EU regulations or directives.
  • SOC 2 – an attestation report on controls at service organisations, based on the AICPA Trust Services Criteria.

Who issues what: ISO certificates are issued by certification bodies, ideally accredited by an accreditation body such as NABCB under the Quality Council of India or another member of the International Accreditation Forum. SOC 2 reports are issued only by licensed CPA firms. Expertvuw does not issue certificates or reports; it assists with documentation, gap assessment and readiness, while the audit and decision rest with the certifying or attesting body.

Who needs these services

  • Manufacturers and service providers whose customers or tenders ask for ISO 9001 as a baseline.
  • Factories, construction and logistics businesses managing environmental impact or worker safety, for whom ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 are relevant.
  • Food processors, caterers and exporters needing ISO 22000, HACCP or GMP to meet buyer or export requirements.
  • IT, SaaS and outsourcing companies handling client data, for whom ISO/IEC 27001 or a SOC 2 report is frequently a contract condition, the latter especially with US clients.
  • Exporters to Europe of products such as machinery, electrical equipment, medical devices or toys, which may need CE marking.

How to choose between the services

  • A tender or customer asks for “ISO certification” in general: ISO 9001 is usually what is meant; confirm with the buyer.
  • You handle personal or client data: ISO 27001 suits global and Indian customers; SOC 2 is typically sought by North American clients. Some organisations pursue both, as many controls overlap.
  • You are in the food chain: HACCP is the base hazard analysis approach; ISO 22000 is a full food safety management system built around it. FSSAI licensing remains a separate legal requirement.
  • You manufacture drugs, cosmetics or food products: GMP certification, alongside any licence the regulator requires.
  • You are exporting products to the EU: CE marking, following the conformity route in the applicable EU legislation, which may require a notified body.
  • Environmental or safety focus: ISO 14001 or ISO 45001; these are often combined with ISO 9001 in an integrated management system.

Before engaging a certification body, check its accreditation status and scope, since certificates from unaccredited bodies may not be accepted by buyers or in tenders.

Frequently asked questions

Who issues an ISO certificate?

ISO itself does not certify organisations. Certificates are issued by independent certification bodies after an audit of the management system. Buyers and tender authorities generally prefer certification bodies accredited by a recognised accreditation body, such as NABCB under the Quality Council of India or another International Accreditation Forum member. Organisations should verify the certification body’s accreditation and scope before engaging it.

How long is an ISO certificate valid?

An ISO management system certificate is generally valid for three years, subject to periodic surveillance audits, usually annual, by the certification body. A recertification audit is needed before the three-year cycle ends. If surveillance audits are missed or major nonconformities are not closed, the certification body may suspend or withdraw the certificate.

What is the difference between ISO 27001 and SOC 2?

ISO/IEC 27001 is an international standard for an information security management system, and results in a certificate from a certification body. SOC 2 is an attestation report prepared by a licensed CPA firm under AICPA standards, describing controls against the Trust Services Criteria. A Type II report covers how controls operated over a period. Many controls overlap, and customer preference usually decides which is needed.

Is ISO certification mandatory in India?

Most ISO management system certifications are voluntary in India. However, they are often required by customers, export buyers or tender conditions. Separately, certain products must carry BIS certification under Quality Control Orders issued under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, and drug manufacturers must follow GMP under Schedule M of the Drugs Rules, 1945. These are legal requirements distinct from voluntary ISO certification.

Does CE marking apply to products sold in India?

No. CE marking is a conformity marking for products placed on the European Economic Area market and has no legal status for sales within India. Indian exporters of products covered by EU legislation, such as machinery, electrical equipment, medical devices or toys, may need it. Depending on the product category, the conformity assessment may involve a notified body designated under EU law.
