Reply to a Legal Notice – Respond on Time, Accurately and Without Weakening Your Position

Last updated: 2 October 2026

Received a legal notice? Ignoring it or replying carelessly can hurt you later. Expertvuw’s team reviews the notice, organises your records and facts, and coordinates a reply drafted and issued by an independent advocate within the time allowed.

Overview

Why Replying Matters

A legal notice usually states a claim and a deadline. While not every notice legally requires a reply, silence can be presented later as an admission, and a reply is the first chance to put your version of the facts on record. In statutory matters the stakes are higher — for example, a company receiving a demand notice under section 8 of the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code has ten days to point out an existing dispute or pay, failing which the creditor may apply to the NCLT.

A good reply addresses each allegation specifically, denies what is incorrect, sets out your facts with supporting documents, raises any counter-claims, and where useful keeps the door open to settlement — without making unnecessary admissions. It should be issued through an advocate and served with proof of delivery.

Common notices that need careful replies include demands for payment, breach of contract, cheque bounce, IP infringement, employee claims and consumer complaints.

Basis: Advocates Act, 1961; Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, 2016 (sections 8 and 9); Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881 (section 138); Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023. Last updated: 27 September 2026.
